19.12.4: cyb/chrome/accommodating visual impairments:
. here are chromebook features for
when the eyes have trouble reading.
. select-to-speak can say selected text,
at least in the browser.
. if you can see only large text,
the docked magnifier works well;
also handy is the (shift control +)
screen resolution
(system menu/setting/device/display/
internal display/display size).
Find the accessibility features:
. open the system menu
(on the dock where the time is shown)
(Alt + Shift + s).
follow the path
Settings/Advanced/Accessibility/
Manage accessibility features.
. turn on the option:
Always show accessibility features in system menu.
now the system menu has an accessibility submenu.
activate the docked magnifier:
system menu/accessibility/docked magnifier
. this uses the top 30% of the screen
to show you a magnification of
whatever part of the screen
the trackpad's cursor is near.
. there is also a fullscreen magnifier,
but it had issues with the cursor freezing,
(unresponsive except for jittering).
. it also confusing with so much panning;
I prefer adjusting the screen resolution.
(shift control +).
. when I mention "search.key",
that is the key on the keyboard
where the capslock.key normally is
(under the tab.key, above shift.key).
select-to-speak:
. after activating
system menu/accessibility/select-to-speak,
select what text you’d like to hear
then press (Search.key + s).
Your Chromebook will read the section aloud
and each word will be highlighted.
. in the text editor Caret,
this only reads the bottom line selected
but it works fine in chrome.browser.
. to change the speed or pitch of the voice
activate ChromeVox (see next),
and changes made to that voice
will be applied to the select-to-speak voice.
activate ChromeVox text to speech:
system menu/accessibility/
ChromeVox (spoken feedback)
or (Ctrl + Alt + z).
slow down speech speed:
Search.key + Shift + [
Speed it up:
Search.key + [
Lower pitch of the ChromeVox voice:
Search.key + Shift + ]
raise the pitch:
Search.key + ]
